Stuttering is not an easy thing to overcome. For children and adults alike, it can be something that can last a long time. If you are a person that does not stutter, there are ways to make stutters feel secure:
- Don't be demeaning to those that stutter. Be patient with them and show your support. Having a speech disorder such as this can be not only embarrassing, but frustrating as well.
- Acknowledge that you're listening to what the affected person is saying. They will feel much better knowing that they have your undivided attention.
- Don't interrupt them while they are speaking. Let them finish saying what they have to say before you interject.
- If you talk to them on the telephone, give them extra time to get their words out. It will probably take them a little longer than usual to say something.
